Although we have heard the benefits of flossing between teeth many times, some people are still reluctant to doing it. Flossing twice a day is recommended. The reason is that flossing helps to get out the food particles that are trapped in between the teeth. Bacteria in the mouth love the sugar and starches that provide food. These nutrients for bacteria come from the foods that we eat – foods such as sweets, sugary foods, and other carbohydrates. Bacteria are found as a film on the teeth and mouth, and it hides under the gum line. Bacteria can cause much damage if not removed; it causes tooth decay, damages the tooth enamel, and causes gingivitis. Bacteria has also been linked to some types of heart disease.
By flossing often, a person can reduce the chances of having oral disease. Bad breath and gums that bleed are signs of an unhealthy mouth. Flossing daily, needs to be combined with a thorough dental hygiene routine of brushing teeth and mouthwash use to increase benefits and decrease the likelihood of having periodontal disease.
Gum disease can happen at any age; it is a result of improper mouth hygiene. Gingivitis is considered the first stage of gum disease; it can get worse, much worse. Bone damage can occur, weakening the support of the teeth, and eventually, the loss of teeth. This is why flossing is so important – to eliminate the chances of bacteria to accumulate in certain areas.
Types of Dental Floss
Thanks to the inventive minds of product developers, today there are many types of dental floss in the market. All types work well when used often and properly. Some are flavored and waxed; flavors include mint, cinnamon, orange, cherry… the wax makes it easier to slide in between teeth. Others are not waxed, nor flavored, but work as well. Many come in rolls of floss while others are in the shape of a convenient tool that has a piece of dental floss attached and a toothpick at the end. This type makes it easy to maneuver between teeth. Others are in the shape of plastic bendable toothpicks with ridges and bristles that easily go in between teeth. There are many choices, and all work well, but they have to be used daily.
